On 24-Mar-2009 I purchased a new Acer Extensa EX4630-4922 notebook for Lee. The Extensa comes with a 2.16GHz Pentium dual-core T3400 CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a DVD writer, and a 14.1" Wide XGA display. This blog is for notes about that notebook.
Ran Windows Update, replaced McAfee with Symantec, replaced trial version of Office 2007 with Office 2007, ran Windows Easy Transfer, did some minor tweaking, and Bob's your uncle!

I've added the following (so far):
The Extensa came with a 60-day trial of McAfee ??? and a 60-day trial of Office 2007. I turned on McAfee, but have not yet activated the Office trial. I need to review the rules for installing software from work on PCs at home. I have both Symantec Endpoint Protection and Office 2003 Professional from work installed on the GX280 desktop, but that's a no brainer given that the GX280 is my telecommute PC.
The rules are pretty loosey-goosey. I'm going to go ahead and install Symantec Endpoint Protection and Office 2007 Professional.
Lee is not an Office user. She used WordPad to enter and edit text for Seymour's "books." I imported the RTF files into Word for spellchecking and preparation for the Kinko's tool. I can probably install Open Office just to have it there and not worry about Microsoft Office unless some future need causes me to revisit the decision.
She does need virus protection. If I'm prohibited from installing Symantec Endpoint Protection from work, I'll look into the free version of AVG; I'm pretty sure I've heard good things about it.
