Open Source
Open Source is an idea whose time has come. Comprehensive
information and extensive links can be found on the Open Source Initiative web site.
It is very important to be aware of the contributions of the Free Software
Foundation and the GNU
Project to the development of the free software movement as
we know it today.

Debian Project
Debian is my Linux
distribution of choice. I believe it is both the most technically
sound and politically correct distribution. Debian has a
reputation for being hard to install. The initial learning curve
is a little steep, but the payoff is that Debian
is by far the easiest distribution to maintain
once it is up and running.

OpenBSD Project
As security becomes a bigger issue, you might want to consider OpenBSD as an alternative to
Linux on exposed machines. OpenBSD is secure by default. The
project emphasizes security, cryptography, and stability. And the
documentation is superb, including release-specific man pages
that are comprehensive and correct.

SourceForge
SourceForge is an
important project which, in their own words
. . . is a free service to Open Source developers offering easy
access to the best in CVS, mailing lists, bug tracking, message
boards/forums, task management, site hosting, permanent file
archival, full backups, and total web-based administration
SourceForge is hosted by VA
Linux Systems, who also own the linux.com domain.
